SEQUENS ← All of SEQUENS

Elegant on the surface.
Massive underneath.

Great teaching, made reliable.

Schools are not short of committed teachers or ambitious leaders. What schools are increasingly short of is implementation coherence.

SEQUENS exists to provide implementation coherence architecture that enables schools to translate their values and strategic direction into observable, coachable and sustainable classroom practice - without overwhelming the humans inside the system.

A structured coaching system embedded in existing Monday planning time. A framework of observable classroom behaviours sequenced from simplest to most complex; coaching leads who observe fortnightly and give one precise adjustment; a monitoring layer that catches drift before it becomes reversion. None of the three is revolutionary. The architecture is in how they connect.

367 moves · 105 sub-steps · 41 phases · 8 domains.

A teacher only ever sees one move at a time.

The teacher dashboard: one move this fortnight, the deliberate-practice ticker, the shared record, and the protected Monday rhythm.

What the research is clear about.

SEQUENS is designed and engineered on this research. Each finding below is built into the architecture.

Coaching is the professional development that actually works.

Across 60 causal studies, instructional coaching moved teaching practice by 0.49 standard deviations. That is a large effect in education research. The same meta-analysis found something else, and it is the reason SEQUENS exists: as coaching programmes scale up, their effects shrink to a fraction of what the small trials showed. Coaching works. Keeping it working across a whole staff is the unsolved problem.

SEQUENS architecture is coaching, not courses: a coach, a real classroom, a fortnightly cycle.

Improvement is a practised skill, not delivered information.

Skill grows through deliberate practice: small, specific actions, rehearsed with feedback, repeated until automatic. Rehearsing one precise move, many times, changes a great deal.

SEQUENS architecture is deliberate practice: one concrete move, rehearsed toward embedded. The embed judgement rests with the coach, not a counter.

One thing at a time is a principle, not a limitation.

Change embeds when it is singular and incremental; ask for many things at once and the load overwhelms. The strongest models work one bite-sized action at a time. The EEF's first mechanism is to manage cognitive load.

SEQUENS architecture is one move at a time: a teacher never sees the 367, only the next one. This page holds itself to the same rule.

Trust is the mechanism, so coaching stays away from judgement.

Coaching works only when a teacher can be honest about what is hard. Blur development into appraisal and teachers perform rather than reveal, and the coaching quietly stops working.

SEQUENS architecture is a wall: notes stay between teacher and coach, and leaders see cohort movement, never the conversation. Coaching is never appraisal.

We think in words and pictures, so teaching uses both.

Working memory runs verbal and visual channels; pairing a clear explanation with a simple, matched image lets more land and stay than either alone. It runs right through the behaviours SEQUENS is built on.

SEQUENS architecture is dual coded: a picture beside every idea, through the domains and through this page.

Inclusion is a foundation, not a feature.

Every one of the 367 behaviours carries its own SEND and EAL guidance, a note inside each move about the learners most easily left behind.

SEQUENS architecture is inclusive by design: reaching every child is the condition on all of it, not a feature beside it.

The architecture.

It is an implementation coherence architecture - not a new initiative, but the structure beneath your existing ones that helps them cohere, sustain, and improve over time.

Eight domains: four a teacher works on in the classroom, four that hold the system up. No teacher ever sees all of it; that is the point.

In the classroom

What every teacher works on, one move at a time.

79moves1Entry & Exit RoutinesHow a lesson opens, settles and closes: the calm, and the transitions.
85moves2Explicit ModellingShowing pupils exactly how, thinking aloud, step by step.
59moves3Adaptive ScaffoldingReaching every learner, including EAL and SEND.
54moves4Deliberate PracticeThe practice, spacing and retrieval that make it stick.

Holding it up

The system that keeps the coaching honest and sustainable.

34moves5Coaching CalibrationEvery coach judging the same thing the same way.
17moves6Sustainability DiagnosticsWatching workload; catching drift before it sets in.
21moves7Leadership CoherenceLeaders protecting the time and modelling the work.
18moves8Adaptive ImplementationThe right rollout for this school, not a template.

The cycle.

1Diagnose

An honest starting picture: self-review, and a first look-in.

2Select the step

One specific behaviour, where it will help most.

3Rehearse it

Practised before the lesson, not in front of thirty children.

4Teach it for real

The move goes into a live lesson.

5Feedback, briefly

A look-in on the protected window, then a short conversation. Length is the coach's call.

6Embed, then gate

Automatic first. Only then does the circle open to the next move.

Coaching is not appraisal.

A teacher's coaching conversations and notes stay between them and their coach. They are never fed into appraisal and never seen by leaders as individuals. It is what makes honesty possible, and a wellbeing safeguard a school can stand behind in any inspection.

Coherent, reliable teaching architecture.

Every teacher, an honest start, one small move, and a short fortnightly look-in, inside the time you already have.
